Town can beat the credit crunch says New Town Centre Manager
Published: 18/09/2008

Attracting trade and celebrating creative talent are priorities for Leamington's new town centre manager who started this week.

Pam Dunsdon began her role on Monday.

The 35-year-old's duties include organising events and encouraging businesses to move to the town.

Miss Dunsdon believes the Business Improvement District (BID) scheme has been a positive move for traders and said:

"I think it is a wonderful thing for Leamington and gives the town a budget.

I will be working very closely with the BID Board to help improve conditions for the shops which pay into the scheme but also for other shops in the town."

She explained that the project had also had a positive effect on Old Town shopkeepers and added: "There may be room for a BID two in the future as it has already encouraged more traders to become involved in the Old Town Business Association, which is good."

Earlier this week the Courier reported that the town's shops have suffered a recent drop in trade but Miss Dunsdon, who has worked for the district council's town management department for four years, believes Leamington can overcome the credit crunch.

She added: "We are in a challenging climate for business and these are difficult times for retail nationally but we are in a fantastic location.

"We have the parks and gardens here and it really is a wonderful place to be."

The Old Town resident has a background in arts events management and is keen to encourage residents to get involved with creative projects held in the town.

She added: "There are a lot of activities and arts events that go on here but people aren't always aware of them.

"I am hoping to get a guide printed to let people know about the things we have happening in Leamington and to make it easier for people to get involved.

"We have a lot of creative and talented people here and I think we should increase links with them and encourage their talents."
